Kwong Wo - Nizami Trophy – Honoring HK Cricket’s Greats!

April 6, 2016

Earlier in the season Diasqua Little Sai Wan Cricket Club approached Hong Kong Cricket Association with a proposal for the two Development Sides in the Hong Kong Sunday league to play for a trophy.

The two development sides would be HKCA’s Dragons, an all Chinese side who are playing their first season of Sunday cricket and DLSW Knights, the club's very own development side.

The Trophy is named after Benny Kwong Wo and Mr. and Mrs. Nauman Nizami, who are better known in the club as Uncle and Aunty Nizami

Benny Kwong Wo is a former HK International Player and the 1st Chinese player to play for Hong Kong, Benny was also the association's first Chinese development officer. Having being born into cricket at Hong Kong Cricket Club, being the son of HKCC Staff member, Benny developed his cricketing skills and was a leg spinner bowler.

Mr and Mrs Nizami has been involved with the club for more than three decades and have been core members of clubs executive board. Currently Mrs Nizami is serving as vice chairperson of the club and Mr. Nizami is a vice president of the club. DLSW have decided to recognize their efforts and commitment towards development of the club by naming the trophy after them.

The match took place on Sunday 3rd April at the Po Kwong Village Road Grounds.

DLSW Knights won the toss first and decided to bat first. Adrian Lee and Henry Siu opened the bowling for Dragons. The Kinghts were in bit of trouble early on with 3 down with the score on 41. However Haroon Arshad, DLSW’s rising young batsman, had a 117 run partnership with Ayan Shetty (57), taking the score to 149/4. Haroon Arshard who has been in good form in junior cricket, ensured he was batting till the 50th over and remained not out on 113, another hundred for the talented youngster. DLSW Knight scored 293/7 in their 50 overs. Adrian Lee, Henry Siu and Li Ka Ming picked up 2 wickets each for the Dragons.

The Dragons knew 293 was a challenging total, but the team did not let the big score shake their confidence, Eddy Ang opened the batting and carried the bat for the entire innings scoring 85 runs not out. Eddy was supported by Jason Lui who scored an impress 53 runs. Niaz Ali, DLSW Knight captain and opening bowler, kept getting breakthrough for the fielding side. Niaz picked up 5 wickets for 28 runs in his 10 overs, causing HKCA Dragons to end up with 246/9 in 50 overs.

DLSW Knights won the game by 47 runs.

Mr and Mrs Nizami presented the trophy to the winning captain, it was competitive cricket played between the two teams. And both sides played good cricket and great improvement from the start of the season
